Zip Code Wilmington has welcomed ChristianaCare’s Dr. Emmanuel Mensah to its board of directors.

Mensah is a board-certified internal medicine physician focused on health equity and disparities, quality improvement and health system design. His expertise will bring a unique perspective to Zip Code Wilmington’s mission of providing career paths through software development and data engineering.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Mensah serving on our board,” said Ben duPont, co-founder of Zip Code Wilmington and president of its Board of Directors. “He is a committed advocate for building healthcare systems that address local and global health challenges, and he understands how software development can drive advancements in patient care.”

Mensah is poised to provide his unique expertise on both the strategic development of Zip Code’s business model as well as the application of technology training to address health equity concerns through Zip Care.

“Zip Care, an offshoot of Zip Code, will train people for entry-level healthcare jobs, creating opportunities for medical careers,” explained Desa Burton, executive director of Zip Code Wilmington.

“People interested in the healthcare field can move from their jobs into medical careers without investing lots of time or money, and healthcare providers will gain access to a talent pool of motivated, skilled healthcare professionals,” she said. “Our graduates will be a vital resource to the community, providing expert, compassionate care where it is needed most.”

Before joining ChristianaCare, Mensah worked in internal medicine at Boston-area hospitals. He has held executive positions for the World Health Organization’s Collaboration Center – Center for Integration Science in Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School and advisory position for the African Union / Africa CDC focusing on Non-Communicable Diseases, Mental Health and Injuries. Mensah is a member of the Society for General Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. During his tenure at Harvard Medical School, he was honored with multiple teaching awards, culminating in the prestigious Charles McCabe Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2022. This accolade was bestowed upon him during his leadership role as Firm Chief in the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School.

Before he became a global adviser on health equity, Mensah was a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs and an engagement manager at McKinsey & Co.

Mensah earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He completed his internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he received the Jeffrey E. Silver Resident Award for his contributions.

“It is an honor to join the Zip Code Wilmington board,” Mensah said. “As a physician and healthcare educator, I witness first-hand the transformative power of education in enhancing well-being. Education creates opportunities for individuals to improve their physical and mental health. I look forward to sharing my insights on education, collaborating with other board members to advance Zip Code Wilmington’s mission and further empower its students.”
